Mathematics in ( central ) Africa before colonization

چکیده

In this journal addressed mainly to archaeologists, historians and anthropologist, a survey of today’s state of the art on (ethno)mathematics writt en by a mathematician may be appropriate. Indeed, even in the 21st century, the prejudice persists mathematical activity was completely lacking in Africa, despite the many publications, conferences and lectures on the topic. However, (ethno)-mathematics hardly gets an opportunity to infi ltrate into protectionist human sciences and thus non-mathematical circles may still doubt the mathematical community considers, for instance, the Ishango rod as a “true” testimony of a mathematical activity.

A History of Selected Topics in Categorical Algebra I: From Galois Theory to Abstract Commutators and Internal Groupoids

This paper is a chronological survey, with no proofs, of a direction in categorical algebra, which is based on categorical Galois theory and involves generalized central extensions, commutators, and internal groupoids in Barr exact Mal’tsev and more general categories. Galois theory proposes a notion of central extension, and motivates the study of internal groupoids, which is then used as an a...

Haplotypes in the dystrophin DNA segment point to a mosaic origin of modern human diversity.

Although Africa has played a central role in human evolutionary history, certain studies have suggested that not all contemporary human genetic diversity is of recent African origin. We investigated 35 simple polymorphic sites and one T(n) microsatellite in an 8-kb segment of the dystrophin gene. We found 86 haplotypes in 1,343 chromosomes from around the world. Although a classical out-of-Afri...

March 2009 Newsletter Early Urban Centres In West Africa

This article examines the diverse research views on the history of urban centres in West Africa. I focus on the characteristics of some of the past urban centres at the time of their peak populations as revealed from the archaeological record. This article concludes that the quantum of research in West Africa is insignificant relative to the vast potentials for research to be conducted there. T...

On some fixed points properties and convergence theorems for a Banach operator in hyperbolic spaces

In this paper, we prove some fixed points properties and demiclosedness principle for a Banach operator in uniformly convex hyperbolic spaces. We further propose an iterative scheme for approximating a fixed point of a Banach operator and establish some strong and $Delta$-convergence theorems for such operator in the frame work of uniformly convex hyperbolic spaces. The results obtained in this...
